Workshop Details

THE PALOUSE is Eastern WA's agricultural centerpiece—

expansive, sensual and rich in historic detail.

Join professional photographers and instructors David Julian and Alan Lawrence on a rural adventure to explore and photograph amazing history, landscape, buildings, rusty vehicles, livestock and wildlife. We've explored the region and consulted with dozens of locals to choose the best locations and timing to deliver a fantastic photographic experience. .

Eastern Washington's Palouse is a rich farming area of almost 3000 miles reminiscent of Tuscany. We explore hills of greens, golds and coppers against a the blue of clean skies. We capture the colors of sunrise, late day 'sweet light' and sunset at Steptoe Butte. We explore the region shooting textures, aged machinery, barns, granaries, wizened trees, farm life, livestock plus many serendipitous surprises. We shoot starry skies and a wind farm.

We know where to be at just the right time.
We also show you how to develop your photos in Lightroom or Photoshop to reveal the best color, contrast and detail. If you love rural history, the richness of the earth contrasting the patina of aging wood and metal, this trip is for you.

So why us?
We're not another cookie-cutter Palouse photo tour.
You benefit from our countless hours of scouting, research, planning and making local connections. We visit locations we've discovered that are not on the photo-tourism maps. We also visit a famous fifth-generation farmer, learn rich Palouse history, sustainable farming and tour his lands and equipment.
He's become a special feature that participants enjoy!

We house you at the perfectly-located Best Western in Colfax where you will enjoy a queen sized bed and included breakfasts. We drive our participants in a comfortable van throughout the tour, saving you hours of trial and error when you could be shooting. Our trip is timed to take advantage of great weather, long days, ripe crops and long Solstice daylight. We provide instructional guidance, individual coaching and options for your solo wandering during the off-shooting hours.

NOTE: We've created the very lowest-priced tour providing both housing, van transportation, daily photo guidance, professional post-production tips, plus the unusual ratio of two gifted local instructors. Many have enjoyed our way experiencing the Palouse!

All transportation during the workshop is provided. We roam the Palouse in a single passenger van. This minimizes our impact, allows for discussion and greater spontaneity for opportunities. While most folks drive in from Seattle, some folks fly into Pullman 30 minutes away and carpool or take a shuttle to Colfax. If you prefer to stay in your camper van, let us know as you register.

All participants will need to sign our provided liability waiver to attend this workshop.

Physical health and behavior
Participants must be able to walk and get in and out of a multi-seat van without mechanical assistance. We park within 50 yards of most subjects, and hiking beyond that is optional. Those with significant allergies to agricultural pollens should bring sufficient meds. You can find dietary food alternatives wherever we eat.

Our reputation as leaders and photographers has been carefully built over years working in the Palouse. We are on private and fragile lands, and in a traditional social ecosystem. Not all residents share our beliefs or political leanings, so we use sensitivity and respect to preserve our welcome in the Palouse.

We'll email more details on what to bring closer to tour date.
